The natural village of Kiviniemi is a popular residential area

The village of Kiviniemi is located in Haukipudas on the shores of the Botanic Sea approximately 20 kilometres north of Oulu. The natural village of Kiviniemi is a popular residential area that has grown through recent decades from a fishing village, with a population of a few hundred, to an urban community with almost 2700 residents.

Kiviniemi has grown around fishing. Fishing was the main trade for nearly all the families in the village up until the 1970s. The traditional fishing trade is still alive in the fishing harbour. In the summer, fishermen arrive at the harbour in the early hours of the morning and fresh fish can be bought directly from the fishing boats. The fishmonger, located at the harbour, sells fresh and cooked fish all year round.

Kiviniemi is also well known for boat-building skills and two boatyards are still in operation.

Kiviniemi harbour is the living room of the village in which both past and present coincide. The new 150-berth marina is expanding its services and aims to be the number one harbour in the Bay of Botnia.

The Botnia Marina building, located in Kiviniemi’s new marina, has space for storage and restoration of boats as well as a sauna, conference facilities and summer café. In the harbour there are cabins for the sea rescue association, boat clubs, scouts and residents’ association. During winter there are also facilities for ice-swimming.

The majority of the inhabitants of Kiviniemi are young families with children. The village has its own school with 160 pupils and currently runs classes for first, second and third class pupils. A modern nursery school, opened in 2000, is located next to the school.

Services in Kiviniemi include among others a shop, pizzeria restaurant, food kiosk as well as several small service sector companies.

Residents’ association provides information

Kiviniemi residents’ association has been operating for more than 30 years. The purpose of the association is to monitor the interests of the residents, promote interaction and recreation as well as to improve the village environment.

One of the challenges for the residents’ association is to improve the flow of information between the association and the residents. The association maintains the Kiviniemi village web pages, and publishes annually or biannually the “Kiviniemeläinen” newspaper. The dream of the inhabitants of Kiviniemi is to one day have communal recreation facilities - a village hall.
